# How do I update the name and serial of a device?

The device name is useful for providing a friendly and recognisable label for your devices, whereas the device serial (referred to simply as the device) is used as a unique reference against which to load data. While the name can be changed, the device serial cannot be changed.

## Update the Device Name

###### 1. Navigate to the Device and Edit the Device

* Navigate to the device in cThings Cloud by clicking *Devices* from the menu on the left-hand side and searching for the device.
* In the top-right corner, expand the *Device* menu and click *Edit Device*

###### 2. Edit the Device Name

* Update the device name
* Click *Update*

The device name should now be updated.
