How can I replace an existing meter?

If you have replaced a meter, you will need to update cThings Cloud to ensure data continues to load.


Important: Ensure that both the new and old device serial numbers are correct before proceeding. Replacing the wrong device may result in data inconsistencies or loss of data.


Replacing an existing device


Navigate to the new device


  • Navigate to the new device page and open the Device dropdown menu in the top-right corner.
  • Select Move from the list.



Select the asset of the device to be replaced


  • Search for the asset where the original (old) meter is currently installed.
  • Select the asset to which to move the new Device



Select the service point to move the device to


  • Identify the device to be replaced.
  • Click on the device.



Replacing the device


  • Click on Replace Device to replace the old device with the new device


Swap Device will move the new meter to the location of the old meter and the old meter to the location of the new meter


Select the replacement date


  • Choose the date the physical replacement occurred on-site.
  • This ensures the timeline of data collection remains consistent.



Confirming the replacement


  • Click Replace Device to save and apply the device replacement.



Ensure the replacement has taken place


  • After the update, both devices will appear under the same asset
  • The new device will be marked as active.
  • The old device will be shown as deactivated.
  • Historical data for the deactivated device remains accessible in the platform.



The old meter’s historical data will remain accessible under the old (deactivated) device. It cannot be transferred to the new (active) meter.
